General Definition of Work
Performs difficult skilled technical work planning, directing, supervising and participating in wastewater treatment plant and lift station operation and maintenance, preparing and maintaining records and reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Public Works Manager. Continuous supervision is exercised over Sewer Maintenance Workers.

Essential Functions
Plans, organizes, supervises and participates in the work of subordinates engaged in plant operations and process control, laboratory analysis and preventive maintenance and repair of plant equipment and facilities and related equipment.
Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on sewer mains, pumps, controls, and tanks; receives work orders, prioritizes tasks and assumes responsibility for completing projects.
Obtains samples for required tests including, but not limited to, checking levels of Dissolved Oxygen Settable solids and nitrates in the effluent.
Operates and maintains wastewater disposal equipment; performs maintenance on pumps, motors and mixers as needed.
Inspects recording charts and meters and on the basis of such information adjusts equipment and controls in conformance with operating instructions.
Maintains inventory of frequently needed parts and supplies.
Develops schedules for routine preventive maintenance and ensures equipment is pulled from use for necessary maintenance work.
Utilizes mathematical formulas to calculate dosing rates; adjusts does rates accordingly.
Monitors and records sludge levels.
Maintains plant records, including operating logs and maintenance work sheets.
24 hour On-call response for Wastewater Emergencies.
Supervises Wastewater Plant Operators and Sewer Maintenance Workers.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the methods and practices of operating a wastewater treatment plant, lift stations, land application and pretreatment program; thorough knowledge of biological, chemical and mechanical principles pertinent to treatment plant operations; considerable knowledge of permit requirements associated with a wastewater treatment plant; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work and related equipment operation; skill in the operation of plant equipment; ability to prepare plans and detailed reports; ability to plan and supervise the work of skilled, semiskilled or unskilled workers; skill in the operation of plant and related equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and general public.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in sewer and water treatment operation, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work frequently walking, sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires standing; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Special Requirements
Possession of Wastewater Operator's Grade III, Grade I Collections, Spray Irrigation Certification issued by the State of North Carolina within one year of employment.
Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
Possession of or ability to obtain valid commercial driver’s license within one year of employment upon request.

General Definition of Work
Performs intermediate skilled trades work planning, coordinating, supervising and participating in the construction, maintenance and repair of parks and recreation facilities, equipment, buildings and grounds, supervising recreation programs, preparing and maintaining appropriate records, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Parks and Recreation Program Director. Limited supervision is exercised over part-time/seasonal staff.

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, equipment, tools and materials used in park maintenance and construction; thorough knowledge of general building, equipment, repair and maintenance; thorough knowledge of forestry, landscaping, and horticulture as applied to parks and grounds areas; thorough knowledge of the grasses, flowers, shrubs and trees grown in the area, their planting time and their soil requirements; thorough knowledge of hazards and necessary safety precautions involved in construction work; ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates; ability to prepare reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to prepare reports and maintain records.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED and considerable experience in the area of park or turf and facility maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
