Wastewater Plant Operator

 

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate skilled trades work participating in the operation and maintenance of the waste water treatment plant, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Wastewater Supervisor/ORC.

Essential Functions

Makes regular tours of plant and equipment.

Monitors and records readings from meters, gauges and instruments, reviews laboratory analyses and checks functioning of equipment.

Starts up, shuts down, regulates and adjusts motors, pumps, compressors, grinders, blowers, valves and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions.

Conducts basic laboratory analysis on wastewater samples to ensure compliance with state regulations.

Maintains adequate chemical level in tanks.

Advises and consults with superiors on unusual operating problems or the need for major repairs to equipment.

Prepares and maintains records and reports.

Performs general building and grounds maintenance work; receives, unloads and stores deliveries.

Performs grounds maintenance work at Spray Irrigation field.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of the water treatment equipment in the plant; general knowledge of hydraulic, chemical and mechanical principles pertinent to water treatment plant operations; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions; ability to detect flaws in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures; ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions; ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain records of shift operations; skill in the use and care of laboratory testing and analysis equipment and instruments; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work frequently walking, sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires standing; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Possession of or ability to obtain Grade 1 Biological Water Pollution Control System Operator certification within one year of employment.

Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.

Assistant Director Visitor’s Center

Performs difficult skilled administrative support work performing a variety of tasks in the operation of the County's Visitor Center, assisting the Visitor's Center Director, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Visitor's Center Director.  Limited supervision is exercised over the Senior Travel Consultant and Travel Consultants.

Assists the Director with center operations; performs the duties of Visitor's Center Director when required.

Completes forms, i.e., traffic count and monthly tracking reports, etc., pertaining to the Center as required.

Represents the Center with state and local officials when the Director is absent or at the request of the Director

Receives and responds to inquiries regarding Center business or tourism.

Assists in training new employees and volunteers.

Attends conferences, workshops, seminars and familiarization tours as directed.

Maintains brochure racks and storage room; orders brochures, map and literature as needed; maintains related records.

Answers and records all travel inquiries

Oversees and assists in maintenance and the appearance of the Center.

Oversees and participates in the gift shop operations. Submits financial tracking forms to Director and Finance Office of all deposits.  Works with staff to secure accurate Sales Ledgers for bookkeeping purposes.

Assists and registers boaters; provides bicycles for trail usage.

Research best prices for office supplies, other resources as needed for Director.

Website and Social Media (Twitter/Instagram/Facebook) engagements and posts on VisitCamdenCountyNC.com and DismalSwampWelcomeCenter.com

Creative Writing – able to provide engaging text for press releases and other marketing materials. 

Manage content for Camden and DSWC on varied online sites- including:  VisitNC.com-TripAdvisor-Google-Yelp-etc.

Graphic Design – preferred – ability to assist with design of ads and creative /promotional marketing

Gift Shop – Assist with the oversight of the Gift Shop.  Order product as directed, manage inventory needs, maintain deposit and credit card tracking, assist staff with sales ledger inclusions.  Assist Director and Bookkeeper with end of month sales ledger completion. 

Tourism Development Authority - Assist Director in maintenance of Camden Tourism business -Website/Social Media/create promotional and marketing ads/materials/brochures.  Assist with the planning and executing of Paddle for the Border and Dismal Day events, other Camden Tourism efforts, including USCG Day, VisitNC media missions.  Work with Director to develop tourism.

Fulfill the obligations of the Director in their absence.

Obtains samples for required tests including, but not limited to, checking levels of Dissolved Oxygen Settable solids and nitrates in the effluent.

Operates and maintains wastewater disposal equipment; performs maintenance on pumps, motors and mixers as needed.

Inspects recording charts and meters and on the basis of such information adjusts equipment and controls in conformance with operating instructions.

Maintains inventory of frequently needed parts and supplies.

Develops schedules for routine preventive maintenance and ensures equipment is pulled from use for necessary maintenance work.

Utilizes mathematical formulas to calculate dosing rates; adjusts does rates accordingly.

Monitors and records sludge levels.

Maintains plant records, including operating logs and maintenance work sheets.

24 hour On-call response for Wastewater Emergencies.

Supervises Wastewater Plant Operators and Sewer Maintenance Workers.
