DEFINITION

Library Assistant I is an entry-level position and initially works under close supervision. As the Library Assistant I will perform a variety of duties related to circulation, reference, materials processing, interlibrary loan, collection monitoring, and working directly with the public helping them find the information they need using the library’s services and facilities. Work is evaluated for customer service effectiveness and accuracy of work activities through daily observation, communication, and review of completed work. Library Assistant, I may be expected to perform job-related duties other than those contained in this document.

SCHEDULE

The schedule for this position is flexible weekdays between 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and most Saturdays as needed.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Collects, stacks, shelves, and re-shelves library materials.
  • Provides positive and upbeat customer service in circulation areas including checking materials in and out of the library, pulling ”holds,” processing returned materials, and preparing them for re-shelving; may handle requests for interlibrary loan; assists patrons with the library catalog and printing, copying, scanning, and fax services.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries, requests for assistance, and information, as well as concerns and complaints from the public regarding library materials, programs, services, technologies, and policies; may refer complex questions to Library Assistant II or professional librarian as necessary.
  • Assists patrons using public computers or with their personal devices.
  • Reserves library materials and notifies patrons of availability; initiates and processes interlibrary loan requests.
  • Processes library card applications and issues library cards; maintains records of current patron information.
  • Computes and collects payments for overdue or lost materials, prints, copies, faxes, used books, and other sale items.
  • Prepares newly acquired library materials for processing and shelving.
  • Monitors the condition of books and materials and performs necessary binding and repairs.
  • Assists in maintaining a neat, clean environment for library staff, and patrons as well as maintaining order and discipline in the library.
  • May participate in outreach services.
  • May plan and prepare library displays and signage.

  • Modern office practices and technology, including the use of computers for data and word processing, records management, Internet searches, presentation, and publication; alphabetical, numerical, and topical filing systems.

  • Understand the general functions and operations of a library.
  • Work with sound judgment and initiative and carry out duties accurately and with attention to detail.

  • Locate, sort, and arrange materials according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System.

Typical Physical Requirements (Library Assistant I and II)

  • Requires the ability to sit at a desk for long periods of time and intermittently walk, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and reach while performing duties; lift and/or move weights of up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to use a telephone to communicate verbally and a keyboard to communicate through written means, review the information and enter or retrieve data, and see and read characters on a computer screen.

Education and Experience:

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Completion of two years of college-level course work in literature, liberal arts, library, education, social science, or a closely related field, is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum two years of clerical experience with public contact. Experience working in a library is desirable.

Grass Cutter Part-time/Seasonal

Performs general, physical work maintaining lawns.  Work is performed under the supervision of the Wastewater Supervisor.

Qualification Requirements

Essential Functions

Maintains the assigned facility grounds.

Maintains and operates landscaping equipment.

Mows lawn either by hand or using a riding lawnmower.

Trim and edge around walks, flower beds, and walls.

Rakes leaves.

Operates tractor.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

General knowledge of maintenance, skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods; ability to follow instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED.

Public Works Manager

                                                                                                                               FLSA Status:  Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs difficult professional work planning, organizing and directing the treatment and collection of wastewater, water, building & grounds, solid waste and related utility operations, coordinating work with appropriate agencies, department directors and County Manager, maintaining records and files and preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the general direction of the County Manager.  Departmental supervision is exercised over all personnel within the department.

Thorough knowledge of wastewater treatment and collection system management and sanitary engineering; thorough knowledge of public utility administration, planning and design; ability to review and analyze plans and specifications for construction of wastewater and sewer facilities; ability to formulate and execute operational polices and procedures; ability to prepare technical reports; ability to direct the activities of a large staff; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County officials, other public officials, associates, contractors and the general public.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree with coursework in public works administration, or related field and extensive experience of an increasingly responsible nature in the public works or utility field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Possession of Wastewater Operator's Grade III, Grade I Collections, B-Well, B-Distribution, Spray Irrigation Certifications issued by the State of North Carolina.

General Definition of Work

Performs administrative support work performing a variety of tasks in the operation of the County's Visitor Center, providing tour planning and consultation services, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Visitor's Center Assistant Director and Visitor's Center Director.

Maintains the inventory of information materials, maps, brochures; updates, assembles and distributes group tour manuals; learns detailed information concerning attractions and events; fills brochure racks and stocks maps under the counter as needed; orders brochures maps and literature as needed; discards outdated information; counts and puts brochures away as needed; keeps accurate records of materials received and discarded; stores materials; answers and records travel inquiries as requested by Director/Assistant Director.

Maintains the general cleanliness of the Visitor's Center, including vacuuming, steaming floors, cleaning windows, etc. 

Assist in training new employees or volunteers.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Some knowledge of methods, approaches, and procedures involved in the travel industry and tourist promotion; some knowledge of the historical and tourist attractions of the County; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, citizens, and the traveling public.

*Gift Shop – utilize good business practices in sales/recording tickets/using a cash register and credit card machine/calculators/closing out sales at the end of the business day.  Recording sales and credit card information for bookkeeping.   Assist with stocking and maintaining inventory.

*Events – assist with registrations/public relations/promotional presence at tourism-related functions as assigned.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
