SHIIP is a division of the North Carolina Department of Insurance's Consumer Assistance Group that assists people with Medicare, Medicare Part D, Medicare supplement, Medicare Advantage and Long-Term care insurance questions. We also help citizens recognize and prevent Medicare billing errors and possible fraud and abuse through our N.C. Senior Medicare Patrol program.

Center for Active Adults Advisory Board

Purpose & Objectives
The Camden County Center for Active Adults Advisory Board shall be responsible for the following duties: 

  1. Serve as the liaison between the older citizens of Camden County and the County government. 
  2. Suggest policy and make recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners on special needs registry of the elderly.
  3. Work to stimulate and promote needed services and programs for older persons. 
  4. Review and make recommendations concerning service proposals and funding of services that have an impact on older persons.
  5. Consult with and assist the Senior Center Coordinator and the County Manager in the preparation of the department budget.
  6. Review the proposed budget with the Senior Center Director and the County Manager prior to the time the Department Budget is submitted to the County Manager.
  7. Perform other functions and duties as may from time to time be requested by the County Manager or the Board of Commissioners.

Membership
The Camden County Center for Active Adults Advisory Board shall be composed of up to seven (7) members who are residents of Camden County to include the Director of Social Services or a designee and a County Commissioner. The County Commissioner appointee shall be appointed annually by the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners. The Camden County Senior Services Department Advisory Board shall include at least three (3) members who are 55 years of age, excluding the Director of Social Services or a designee and the County Commissioner.

Regular meetings of the Camden County Center for Active Adults Advisory Board shall be held quarterly or at least every other month or as otherwise directed by chair. Must have (3) members to conduct a meeting.

Harmony Cafe of the Albemarle - Did you know that Camden County was working towards becoming a "Dementia Friendly" county? Harmony Cafe is a memory cafe for care receivers and caregivers to gather for activities in a safe, supportive, and engaging environment.

When: Meets 2nd Saturday each month from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Q. What are the Center for Active Adults hours of operation?

A. The Center is open Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 5:00pm. 

Q. How old do you have to be to become a member?

A. To use the exercise room 55 years old. There is no cost involved to become a member of Camden County Center for Active Adults or to use the exercise room. You must have a completed Client Registration Form and an Exercise Waiver form on file.

Q. Hold old do you have to be eligible for lunch in the center?

A. Camden County residents must be 60+ and their spouses regardless of age when the older adult is a nutrition client. Must be a member of the Camden Center for Active Adults and have on file a completed Client Registration Form on file. This form can be completed at the center.

Q. How can I receive a Home Delivered Meal?

A. You must be unable to participate in the congregate nutrition (lunch within the Center) program because of physical or mental impairment. Not be able to physically shop for food or fix a meal and have no one available to prepare a meal. You must live within 5 miles of the County Courthouse.

Q. Do you serve special restricted meals, such as meals for Diabetics etc.?

A. Our meals are prepared by Montero's in Elizabeth City. We do not have special meals. Our meals meet the Older Americans Act nutrition requirements for 1/3 RDA (required daily amount). Please check our site for an updated menu which includes a breakdown of Calories, Fat Present, Sodium, Calcium, Protein and Vitamin-C.

Q. Do we offer specialized care?

A. No, we are unable to provide this assistance. Our primary focus is to offer a comfortable atmosphere for Senior Citizens to come meet and socialize with other Senior's. However, we can provide information for special adult day care.

Free Tax Assistance

The Camden County Center for Active Adults offer FREE tax assistance during tax season for Seniors 55 and over. Call (252) 335-2569 for more information or to make an appointment. 

General Transportation

We can arrange transportation to and from the Senior Center by Inter County Transit Authority.(ICPTA) We can also obtain information necessary for you to make reservations for a ride to the grocery store.

Congregate Meals

The senior center has a delicious lunch provided by a caterer. Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 11:00 a.m. We have a very spacious dining room with a homey atmosphere. Cost of the meal is a contribution or donation. You or your spouse must be 60 years or older to receive a meal. A twenty-four hour advance reservation is required.

Home Delivered Meals

We provide a home delivered meal service. You must live within a five (5) mile radius of the Camden County Center and be homebound. You or your spouse must be 60 years or older. For this service please call the Camden Senior Center 252-335-2569 or Brenda Gates at the Albemarle Commission at 252-426-7093 x 228. Please make sure we have the name, age, address, and phone number of the person or persons who need this service.

Fitness Center

Our Fitness Center is open five days a week. Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Fitness Center is FREE to those 55 years and older. You must be registered as a member of the center before you can begin exercising.

Volunteering and Teaching Opportunities

Volunteering and Teaching Opportunities are available. Do you enjoy working with others? Do you have a special skill or talent that you would like to share with others? Would you like to make a difference in the lives of older adults? We have been waiting for you. We are in need of Volunteers to instruct morning Crafts, Line Dancing, Painting and Basic Computer classes.

Medicaid Applications

Medicaid Applications may be picked up at the Senior Center. We will be glad to assist you in the completion of the form. All completed Medicaid Applications must be taken by you to the Department of Social Services for processing. Applications are in the brochure rack in our dining room.

Medical Transportation

Medical Transportation for those receiving Medicaid need to call the Department of Social Services. Only DSS can arrange transportation for Medicaid covered medical services. For those seniors who are not on Medicaid you must call Inter County Public Transit Authority,(ICPTA) 252-338-4480 and arrange your appointment for transportation. We will be glad to help non Medicaid seniors with this service. DSS is open Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Special Needs Registry

Copies of the Special Needs Registry for those who need this service in case of hurricanes or other disasters are available at the Camden Senior Center. This Registry is kept on file with Pasquotank-Camden-Elizabeth City Emergency Management Agency. If you need assistance with evacuating, especially you are handicapped please complete this form. If you need a form please call, 252-335-2569 and we will mail you one.
