A. Records dating from 1848 to today are available.

Q. How much does a marriage license cost?
A. A marriage license costs $60.00. This fee is only payable by cash, check, certified check, or money order. The Camden Register of Deeds office is not able to accept credit cards.

Q. Can we apply for a marriage license in Camden County and get married in a different county in the state?
A. Yes. You can be married in any county in North Carolina. However, the license must be returned to the Camden County office within 10 days of the ceremony.

Q. Is a premarital physical required?
A. No. Physical examinations are no longer required for marriage.

Q. How long is the license valid?
A. A marriage license is valid for sixty days from the date issued.

Q. What are the requirements to obtain a marriage license?
A. If you are under the age of 18:

  • Both parties must personally appear at the Register of Deeds office.
  • Both parties must present a certified birth certificate.
  • Both parties must present a valid Driver's License or a valid U.S. Government issued pictured ID card.
  • Both parents or legal guardian(s) must be present and present legal documentation to prove they are the parent or legal guardian. You may be required to produce a certified copy of court orders.
  • A valid Social Security CARD is required or an affidavit which states that you are not eligible for a Social Security Number.

Q. Can we apply for a marriage license after the marriage ceremony has taken place?
A. No. A marriage ceremony cannot take place without a valid marriage license.

Q. Who can perform a marriage ceremony?
A. Any ordained minister with a church can perform a marriage ceremony. The Officiant does not need a special license to perform a ceremony in North Carolina. Magistrates can also perform marriage ceremonies. You can reach a Camden County magistrate by calling 252-331-4871 ext 1010.
