General Definition of Work                                                                                                       

Performs human support work pertaining to the daily operation of the center /nutrition site.  Includes but is not limited to receiving food from caterers, ensuring proper numbers of meals are received, inspecting quality and temperature of food, serving congregate meals, and other related work as apparent or assigned by the coordinator.  The employee is responsible for assisting in center activity coordination, planning, supervision, social interaction, scheduling, and preparing required reports. Work is performed under the supervision of the Senior Center Coordinator.

Essential Functions

Prepares the nutrition site for the day’s meals and activities including, but not limited to, calibrating thermometers, ordering meals and utensils, sanitizing surfaces, and setting out supplies before and after; Ensures meals arrive and remain at temperatures in accordance with food service standards.

Assists in the daily operations of congregate nutrition program while maintaining clients & records of clients; organizes supplies and registers clients for congregate meals; tracks and reports various data.

Helps to plan educational, health, and recreational activities, classes, and programs for seniors.

Prepare and distribute press releases and public service announcements to publicize activities and events.

Assist in completing various paperwork including, but not limited to, the number of registrants, meals served, total amount of contributions collected, and volunteer time records.

Receives calls and handles or refers to the appropriate person, organization, or county agency.

Assists in the coordination and transportation of participants in the center’s van for day trips.

Assist the Coordinator daily with ICPTA scheduling rides for seniors requiring transportation.

Must be able to drive center van, and work occasional nights/weekends as center activities require.

Operates various office machines and has computer skills to include, a working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite.

Successfully complete online certification to become a Senior Health Insurance Information Counselor (SHIIP).

Will provide assistance to staff performing other duties as needed.

Oversees Nutrition site operations in the absence of the Nutrition Site Coordinator

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

General knowledge of food preparation and service; ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms; prepare reports, ability to relate to older adults and demonstrated special interests in the needs and desires of senior citizens; ability to complete reports and records accurately; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers, senior citizens, associates, and the general public.

 

Education and Experience

Two-year degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, and tasting or smelling, frequently requires lifting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and small parts, using measuring devices and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Valid Driver’s License.
